From frozen lakes and ponds, backyard rinks, and even outdoor stadiums, hockey was meant to be played outdoors! As part of Montana Tech’s 125-year celebration, the Diggers hit the ice on Leonard Field to honor the storied history of the school and hockey programs of the past on January 31st, 2026. Montana Tech will battle the University of Providence Argos under the watchful eye of the original School of Mines Buildings, playing against the impressive backdrop that is Butte, Montana. This event is sure to be magical!
The team will be wearing commemorative Heritage jerseys, based on the same hockey sweaters the original school of mines team wore in the 50’s and 60’s.

This event is weather dependent. If outdoor conditions are not suitable, the game will be rescheduled and played at the Butte Community Ice Center at 7:30 PM.
