The Enchanting M features a self-guided, illuminated 1-mile loop below the M, open throughout the evening and available to explore at your own pace. Follow the softly glowing path lined with string lights, ice luminaries, and a cozy fire pit at the entrance. Wander, warm up, and take in sweeping views of Butte’s city lights below. The loop will be available for the full event window, and participants are welcome to complete the loop as many times as they’d like (see map below for route details).
Throughout the evening, the illuminated loop is complemented by IlluminDance, a short, optional community circle dance illuminated by SnoFlinga flashlight lantern torches and accompanied by live West African rhythms from Butte’s own Michael McDaniel. IlluminDance is a celebration of dance, light, rhythm, and spectacle, with dancers and a puppet from IlluminDance Theatre. Feel free to bring your own lighted props or costuming to add to the magic.
Kids (and Kids at Heart!) can opt in to an optional adventure Quest hosted by IlluminDance Theatre with special illuminated prizes gifted by presenting sponsor Opportunity Bank of Montana.
How to prepare for this event:
- Dress appropriately for Butte’s winter nights—think multiple layers and insulated boots.
- Wear sturdy footwear with good traction and/or Yaktrax for navigating the full loop.
- Depending on trail conditions, hiking or ski poles may be helpful.
- Bring additional lighting as needed, depending on your preference (a limited number of flashlight lantern torches will be available to borrow).
